Tyre Wear

What your tread is telling you!

Before embarking on your holiday road trip, take the time to thoroughly inspect your tyres for signs of wear and damage. Identifying these issues early can prevent breakdowns and ensure a safer journey.

Here are some key indicators to look for:

  • Worn tread: The tread on your tyres is crucial for traction. If your tread depth is below 1.6 mm, it’s time to replace your tyres. You can easily check tread depth using the coin test—insert a 20-cent coin into the tread groove. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your treads are too worn.
  • Sidewall cracks: Inspect the sidewalls of your tyres for cracks or cuts. These can develop due to age, UV exposure, or hitting potholes. If you notice any significant cracks, it may compromise the integrity of the tyre, leading to blowouts, especially under pressure.
  • Bulges and blisters: Bulges or blisters on the tyre surface are warning signs of internal damage, often caused by impact with road hazards or manufacturing defects. If you spot these, it’s crucial to replace the tyre immediately, as they can lead to sudden failures while driving.
  • Uneven wear patterns: Look for uneven wear across the tyre surface, which may indicate misalignment, improper inflation, or suspension issues. Common patterns include wear on the inside or outside edges of the tyre. If you notice uneven wear, have your vehicle checked by a professional to prevent further damage.

Don’t forget your spare tyre!

A functional spare tyre is a must for any road trip. Before you leave, check the condition of your spare tyre:

  • Pressure check: Just like your main tyres, ensure your spare is properly inflated. An under-inflated spare won’t be much help in an emergency.
  • Look for any visible signs of wear or damage. A spare that’s been sitting for a while can develop cracks or dry rot.

Having a reliable spare tyre can provide peace of mind, knowing that you’re prepared for unexpected situations.
